Smoking Cessation Session
What to expect
After an initial short phone or e-mail consultation we schedule an in-person (or via Skype) assessment session. But before the assessment session I send you a simple intake form to fill out and send me back by e-mail or post mail. Or, if you prefer, we fill it out together during the assessment session. However, when I have it before the assessment session it saves us a lot of time.
The assessment session is free of charge. During that session we have a chance to get to know each other. Then I gather information about the issue and your conscious and unconscious reactions to it. Finally, I use couple of technique to find out can I help you or not. When I can, I describe how the process goes, how many session it takes (most of the time it takes one or two, rarely three sessions) and what you need to do (are you committed?) to keep yourself free of smoking.
The initial session could last from 2 to 3 hours. I recommend do not smoke before coming and bring with you your last pack of cigarettes.
In the first hour we go through the structure of your smoking habits in different situation, timings and places. We check and preserve benefits you have from that bad habit such as taking a time to rest, to cool down and so on. Then we spend some time on breaking the smoking habit and testing it. We might create situations or go to the places where you used to smoke. For example a time after a dinner, with coffee, your car, next to a computer, your special smoking places and so on.
Along with breaking the habit we work on the addiction part of smoking as well.
You also learn how to address weight management issues (if any) after quitting smoking.
After the session when we agree that you do not need your last pack of cigarettes and might leave it with my ‘Last Pack Collection’.
Since we are dealing with a habit and an addiction for some people I might suggest having one or two more sessions or a short web/phone session during the first 72 hours. This is the maximum time for nicotine to dissipate and bring the craving to zero. You will be equipped with techniques to easily deal with craving (if any) during that time.
For most people this is it, nothing else you need to become FREE of smoking. You can use the techniques that I taught you for any other emotional issues since they are universal to help control feelings and emotions.
